This is my second participation in the Developers Conference (DevCon) which is planned on the 9,10 and 11th September. Due to the ongoing Covid19 problem, the organisers have decided to have a virtual DevCon for 2020, which seems to be exciting to say the least. For my participation, I wanted to talk about Blockchain Governance and its relevance to the current environment, not only in the blockchain space but also its importance in real life governance. I decided to go one step further by setting up a practical example of how this would work with a smart contract-based voting system controlled by the audience, instead of the speaker.

What is Developers Conference?

DevCon is a very popular 3-day multiple track event which gathers people from tech sectors to share their knowledge. This year’s major difference will be that all sessions are going to be virtual and live streamed on the MSCC Youtube channel. All sessions will be recorded and uploaded after a quick post-processing after the conference.

I will be talking about Blockchain Governance, broaching specific topics like direct, representative, on-chain and off-chain governance models.

Importance of Blockchain Governance

For any kind of institution, organization, services or large bodies, governance is an integral part of their core activities. Governance is very important because it will determine the control of how to manage such bodies, or in the perspective of my presentation, how to manage blockchains. Governance models can be as democratic and decentralized as wanted based on the requirements of the community.

Blockchain Governance via Smart Contracts

One very interesting development related to smart contracts is how they can be used for governance in different use cases. For my presentation, I have set up a system where the audience will be able to change the direction of the presentation based on what they want. They will be able to do so by voting on the different topics that I will talk about. This is enforced via a smart contract.
